How to Take Body Measurements for Sewing

Accurate measurements are the starting point of better fit. Before choosing a size, cutting fabric or adjusting a pattern, it helps to record the most important body values in a clear order.

Measure the chest, waist and hips first

Chest, waist and hips usually control the main fit decisions for many garments. Use a soft tape measure, keep it level around the body, and avoid pulling too tightly.

These three values often determine whether the initial size range is realistic before you move on to more detailed measurements like sleeves or back length.

Then add garment-specific measurements

Once the main body measurements are recorded, add values such as shoulders, sleeve length, neck, inseam or back length depending on the garment you plan to make.

Shirts and jackets often need better shoulder and sleeve information, while pants rely more heavily on inseam, hips and waist balance.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure over fitted clothing or directly on the body?

For the most reliable result, measure directly on the body or over very light fitted clothing so the tape follows the real shape as closely as possible.
